IBM launches food-tracking blockchain after 18 months of testing

Today, the IBM Food Trust Platform launches to assist retailers, wholesalers, and suppliers in tracking food products throughout a supply chain. This launch represents one of the first enterprise blockchain networks of scale to be fully deployed. The launch was coupled with the announcement that Carrefour, the French supermarket giant with 12,000 stores across 33 countries, has signed to use the platform. Carrefour joins a list of companies including Nestle, Dole Food, Tyson Foods, Kroger, Unilever, and Walmart that have agreed to use IBM's blockchain. If successful, the IBM Food Trust will limit the risk of future food-related outbreaks by enabling the ability to trace items backward and forward through the supply chain, thus containing contamination.
