Web3 startup Spaceport is bringing major South Korean gaming studio’s IP to Roblox and Fortnite
Quick Take
- Spaceport is teaming up with a unit of South Korean mobile and online gaming company Com2uS to bring its IP onto Roblox and Fortnite.
- The web3 startup forged a similar partnership with Toei Animation, the studio behind “One Piece” and “Dragon Ball,” on Tuesday.
Web3 intellectual property startup Spaceport is teaming up with a unit of South Korean mobile and online gaming company Com2uS to bring its IP onto Roblox and Fortnite. Thus, the 500 million or so gamers who spend time in those popular virtual worlds will now be able to play as characters and monetize derivative works among Com2uS’s many franchises.
The move is the latest in a series of partnerships where Spaceport’s “Internet of IP” platform is being tapped to get existing content in front of new audiences and “democratize” how it can be used, the company said Wednesday in a statement. For example, Toei Animation, the studio behind “One Piece” and “Dragon Ball,” announced Tuesday it will use Spaceport to license its IP from its upcoming film “Hypergalatic” to Roblox and Fortnite.
While many firms are typically protective of their IP and work to limit how it can be used, Spaceport will allow Roblox and Fortnite players to remix Com2uS and Toei’s creations without fear of legal reprisal. In addition to a content management system, Spaceport helps track the provenance of these derivative works, also known as “user-generated content.”
Spaceport was co-founded in 2022 by Le Zhang and Lida Tang, who previously helped launch billion-dollar gaming franchises including “BioShock” and “Saints Row,” with $3.6 million in venture backing from Arca, Decasonic and CRIT Ventures.
