Coinbase Payments has officially joined the Open Intents Framework (OIF) as a core contributor, collaborating with the Ethereum Foundation and other key ecosystem participants to advance open standards for intent-based applications.

The OIF offers a modular toolkit designed to standardize and simplify the development of cross-chain intents on Ethereum, addressing fragmentation across Layer 2 solutions and protocols.

It builds on ERC-7683, a standard for cross-chain intents, and provides a full stack — including smart contracts, solvers (for processing intents), and user interfaces — to help unify Ethereum’s fragmented Layer 2 ecosystem.

“In collaboration with multiple teams in the Ethereum ecosystem, we’re building open standards for permissionless, secure asset movement on existing crypto rails,” Coinbase said.

As a core contributor, Coinbase Payments will work alongside multiple Ethereum teams to scale these standards, potentially accelerating the adoption of intent-centric technologies. These include the Ethereum Foundation, Hyperlane, Across Protocol, OpenZeppelin, and various Layer 2 teams across Ethereum.

An intent refers to a user’s high-level declaration of a desired outcome on the blockchain without specifying the exact steps or mechanisms required to achieve it. Intents play a crucial role in improving cross-chain interoperability by addressing challenges in fragmented blockchain ecosystems, such as Ethereum’s Layer 2 networks.
