Nasdaq partners with Boerse Stuttgart's Seturion to advance tokenized settlement in Europe
Quick Take
- Nasdaq has partnered with Seturion, a tokenized settlement platform launched by Boerse Stuttgart Group, to modernize Europe’s fragmented post-trade infrastructure.
- The partnership is set to connect Nasdaq’s European trading venues to Seturion’s blockchain-based platform.
- Nasdaq also announced a partnership with Kraken on Monday to develop infrastructure linking tokenized equities with blockchain networks.
Nasdaq has partnered with Seturion, a tokenized settlement platform under Boerse Stuttgart Group, in a move to modernize Europe's "fragmented" post-trade infrastructure and accelerate the adoption of tokenized securities across the region, the exchange said.
The partnership will connect Nasdaq's European trading venues to Seturion's blockchain-based platform, enabling the trading and settlement of tokenized securities through the network, according to a Monday statement.
Initially, the collaboration is focusing on structured products, with plans to expand to additional asset classes and market participants over time. Boerse Stuttgart's Seturion supports all asset classes across public and private blockchains, according to the statement.
The announcement follows Nasdaq's partnership with Kraken's parent company Payward to develop infrastructure to link tokenized equities to blockchain networks. This initiative centers on building an "equities transformation gateway," with Nasdaq's equity token framework expected to become operational in the first half of 2027.
'Transformative opportunity'
The Seturion partnership seeks to address the patchwork of post-trade systems that makes settling securities across European borders inefficient.
"Europe's capital markets are highly fragmented, with numerous post-trade infrastructure providers and legal divergence across the European Union, resulting in higher costs, longer settlement cycles, and operational complexity," the statement said.
By linking its venues to Seturion, Nasdaq aims to streamline the process by creating a "single, unified settlement platform" through blockchain technology.
"Tokenization presents a transformative opportunity to address inefficiencies in settlement and securities processing workflows, while preserving the trust, stability, and regulatory rigor that underpin well-functioning markets," said Roland Chai, president of European market services and head of digital assets at Nasdaq.
The partnership reflects a broader push by traditional financial market operators to step into the blockchain and crypto space. Earlier this month, Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, invested in crypto exchange OKX at a $25 billion valuation.
