Optimism (OP) is a cryptocurrency based on Layer 2 technology that addresses the scalability issues of blockchain platforms like Ethereum. It offers faster and cheaper transactions compared to the main Ethereum network. The OP token serves as a medium of exchange and a governance token, allowing users to participate in decision-making processes. Optimism focuses on reducing transaction costs, increasing throughput, and enhancing privacy and security through its decentralized architecture. It is compatible with Ethereum wallets and can be traded on decentralized exchanges.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the most commonly asked questions about Optimism. Can’t find what you’re looking for, reach out to our support team for specific answers.

The Superchain is a network of Ethereum Layer-2 blockchains all built on the open-source OP Stack. Member chains include OP Mainnet, Base (Coinbase), Unichain (Uniswap), World Chain (Worldcoin), Soneium (Sony), Ink (Kraken), and others. Each chain operates independently but shares a common technical standard, enabling interoperability, shared security, and a unified governance framework. As of early 2026, the Superchain accounts for over 61% of L2 fee market share and processes approximately 13% of all crypto transactions. Each participating chain contributes a portion of its sequencer revenue back to the Optimism Collective, creating a shared economic flywheel.

In January 2026, Optimism governance approved (84.4% in favor) a proposal to use 50% of incoming Superchain sequencer revenue for monthly OP token buybacks over a 12-month pilot period. Over the prior year, Superchain sequencers generated approximately 5,900 ETH in revenue. Purchased OP tokens flow to the Collective treasury, where governance decides whether to burn them, distribute as staking rewards, or use for ecosystem incentives. This mechanism directly ties OP demand to network usage — as more chains join the Superchain and transaction volume grows, more revenue funds buybacks. It shifts OP from a pure governance token toward an asset aligned with Superchain economic performance.

RetroPGF is Optimism’s mechanism for rewarding builders who create public goods — infrastructure, tools, and resources that benefit the ecosystem but may not generate direct revenue. Instead of funding projects based on promises (grants), RetroPGF rewards them retroactively based on demonstrated impact. The Citizens’ House evaluates contributions and distributes OP tokens to builders whose work has been most valuable. This approach, inspired by the idea that “it’s easier to agree on what was useful than what will be useful,” creates a sustainable funding model for open-source development and public infrastructure.

Optimism uses a two-chamber governance system. The Token House, composed of OP token holders and delegates, votes on protocol upgrades, treasury spending, and network parameters. The Citizens’ House, defined by non-transferable “citizenship” credentials (soulbound), oversees RetroPGF allocation and decisions about public goods funding. This separation is designed to balance economic incentives (Token House) with mission-driven stewardship (Citizens’ House), preventing purely profit-motivated governance from overriding the Collective’s long-term goals.

OP has a total supply of 4.29 billion tokens, with a significant portion still vesting. Core contributors and investors are subject to multi-year vesting with cliff periods, meaning new supply enters circulation on a scheduled basis. These unlock events can create selling pressure as recipients liquidate vested tokens. The full vesting schedule extends through 2028–2029 for the earliest allocations. Tracking unlock dates alongside Superchain revenue and buyback activity is essential for understanding OP’s supply-demand dynamics — the buyback program is designed in part to offset dilution from ongoing unlocks.
