Block Explorer

A block explorer is essentially a search engine for blockchain data, allowing anyone to search and view real-time information on transactions, wallet addresses, blocks, and smart contract interactions.

Block explorers make this possible by cataloguing all of the network’s raw public data and presenting it in a human-readable format. Users can then search for any wallet, smart contract or transaction on the network. This allows them to verify the status of their transactions without the need for a middleman, or even track the flow of funds between different accounts.

When pulling up a transaction record on a block explorer, users paste in its transaction hash (TXID). The explorer then provides details such as the addresses involved, transfer amounts, fees and confirmation status. This provides an authoritative record of when a transaction has concluded successfully, allowing blockchain users to directly verify the claims of transaction counterparties.

Onchain analytics is another key function of block explorers. These platforms allow any user to pull up the balance history and activity of any network participant, along with broader network statistics. When conducting forensic accounting or economic research, serious researchers will often use block explorers in conjunction with other advanced onchain analytics tools.

Some popular block explorers include Etherscan (for Ethereum), Solscan (for Solana) and BaseScan (for Base).
