In this episode, Eigenlayer founder Sreeram Kannan explains how his background in tech and interest in peer-to-peer wireless systems led him to explore the potential of crypto and blockchain technology.

Kannan is a former academic whose research into peer-to-peer wireless networks and information theory shaped his thinking about how decentralized systems can coordinate trust and resources at scale. EigenLayer, the protocol he founded, introduced restaking to Ethereum, allowing staked ETH to be reused to help secure additional applications and infrastructure, known as actively validated services, without requiring each of those services to bootstrap its own independent validator set and token economics from scratch.

Over the course of the episode, Kannan walks through EigenLayer's broader vision for pooled, permissionless security, touching on how the protocol effectively extends Ethereum's economic security across a growing ecosystem of middleware, oracles, bridges, and data availability layers. He and Cermak explore the idea of a digital commons, discussing how EigenLayer aims to let builders draw on shared trust infrastructure the way public goods function in the physical world, and how bringing verifiable off-chain data onchain expands what decentralized applications can safely rely on.

The conversation also covers EigenLayer's partnership with the Ethereum Foundation, the technical and coordination challenges of scaling a system meant to underpin dozens of independent services, and the design of the EIGEN token, which extends the protocol's security model into forms of slashing that go beyond simple cryptographic faults. Kannan closes by laying out a long-term roadmap for the project spanning decades, framing restaking not just as a near-term infrastructure play but as a long-horizon bet on how coordination itself gets rebuilt on open, verifiable rails.

For listeners tracking Ethereum's restaking narrative, the episode offers a founder's-eye view of one of 2024's most consequential infrastructure bets, fitting squarely within The Block's ongoing coverage of the people building crypto's underlying plumbing. Cermak also presses Kannan on the practical tradeoffs of shared security, including how slashing risk is priced and communicated to operators and stakers who commit capital across multiple services at once.
