Lightning Network infrastructure provider Amboss has launched Magma AI, a machine learning-powered channel management tool designed to help node operators improve routing performance and manage liquidity more efficiently.
The tool aims to tackle a fundamental challenge in scaling Bitcoin payments to ensure the network can support the growing demands of digital commerce and automated transactions.
“As platforms process more high-volume payments and AI systems drive new forms of machine-to-machine commerce, intelligent capital allocation becomes essential for Bitcoin's payment infrastructure,” the Amboss team said in a statement shared with The Block.
To help achieve this, Magma AI offers two modes for Lightning Network users: Altruistic and Optimized. Altruistic mode aims to improve Lightning Network scalability by prioritizing recommendations for overall network efficiency, whereas Optimized mode focuses on maximizing individual node performance for high transaction throughput.
"Making Bitcoin practical for digital commerce starts with getting the fundamentals right," Amboss CEO and co-founder Jesse Shrader said. "Magma AI brings intelligence to channel management, helping Lightning Network nodes operate more efficiently today while building toward a future where Bitcoin can handle millions of automated transactions and becomes the backbone of the coming machine economy."
How Magma AI works
Magma AI leverages reinforcement learning to optimize channel management on the Lightning Network. Developed in collaboration with Stillmark, an early-stage Bitcoin venture firm, it analyzes network data to optimize channel selection, maximize payment routing efficiency and minimize costs.
The tool is designed for Lightning Network operators of all sizes, providing advanced channel management without needing deep technical expertise by embedding intelligence directly into the infrastructure, the team said.
"Bitcoin is the natural foundation for the machine economy, but it needs infrastructure that works at the speed of software," Shrader said. "Magma AI is another step in building the intelligence layer that makes this possible, helping Lightning Network evolve into reliable infrastructure for automated commerce."
Amboss launched Hydro in September 2023, a subscription-based automatic liquidity sourcing product for the Bitcoin Layer 2. In December of that year, it launched “Ghost Addresses” — a new type of Lightning Address that enables users to receive payments directly into their own custody, avoiding reliance on dominant custodial wallets.
Addressing Lightning Network adoption
The Lightning Network is a second-layer solution of payment channels built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain, designed to enable fast and low-cost transactions.
Businesses have previously faced challenges in sourcing liquidity and managing Lightning channels, hindering enterprise adoption and fueling the use of centralized custodial solutions.
Overall Lightning Network adoption has continued to grow over the past year, with a current total capacity of nearly 5,220 bitcoin, according to The Block's data dashboard.
This is down 7.5% from a peak of 5,640 bitcoin in 2023 and has largely stagnated in bitcoin terms for the past two years. However, with the substantial increase in bitcoin’s price during that time, the Lightning Network's capacity is up sixfold to an all-time high of around $525 million in dollar terms since Jan. 1, 2023.
