MultiversX integrates Google’s new AI commerce standard, adds support for Coinbase-incubated x402 payments

Quick Take
- The rollout is part of a broader push across crypto networks to position blockchains as infrastructure for AI agents to operate and transact autonomously.
- New payment and transaction standards aim to let AI systems access data, services and digital assets without relying on traditional checkout or login flows.

MultiversX said it has become the first blockchain to integrate Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, allowing AI agents to transact directly on its network without human involvement.
Google introduced UCP in January as an open standard aimed at letting AI assistants discover products, negotiate prices, and complete purchases across online merchants. The framework was developed alongside retailers, including Shopify, Walmart, and Target, as companies prepare for a future where AI agents are deployed to shop and transact on users’ behalf.
With MultiversX’s new integration, AI systems running on platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can now check wallet balances, transfer tokens, and execute blockchain transactions directly on the network.
The move comes as several blockchain networks compete to become infrastructure for an emerging AI agent economy. Ethereum, for example, launched its own ERC-8004 standard last week, designed to give AI agents onchain identity and reputation systems and allowing them to operate as economic participants across decentralized applications.
AI models often struggle to reliably interact with blockchains, frequently generating incorrect code or transaction instructions when left to guess how networks operate. MultiversX said large language models "lack reliable, structured information about how to interact with specific blockchain networks," adding that guessing is problematic when real value is involved.
The company said its new infrastructure instead gives agents a standardized way to execute blockchain operations reliably.
Payments layer arrives via x402
The rollout also builds on MultiversX’s recent integration of x402, a payment protocol originally incubated by Coinbase that embeds payments directly into standard web requests.
x402 allows apps, services, or AI agents to automatically pay for online resources, such as APIs or premium data, without requiring logins, redirects, or manual checkout flows. A December upgrade expanded the protocol to support multiple blockchains as well as traditional payment rails like cards and ACH.
Together, the tools aim to enable so-called "agentic commerce," where AI systems can access services and move money programmatically.
Potential uses include research agents paying for data access, automated trading strategies interacting with decentralized finance applications, or AI services charging users directly for compute or analysis.
