Holochain is the underlying peer-to-peer application framework. Holo is the company and hosting network built on top of it, connecting apps to everyday users. HOT (HoloToken) is the ERC-20 placeholder token used during the transition period, redeemable for HoloFuel once the network matures.
HoloFuel is a mutual credit currency backed by hosting capacity. When you provide computing resources to the network you earn HoloFuel; when you consume resources you spend it. Supply expands and contracts based on real economic activity rather than a fixed issuance schedule, making it fundamentally different from standard cryptocurrencies.
A HoloPort is a plug-and-play device that hosts Holochain apps on behalf of users, earning HoloFuel in return. Hosting on Holo works by distributing app data across many HoloPorts rather than centralizing it on corporate servers, letting anyone with spare computing power participate as a micro-host.
Holochain replaces the global consensus model of blockchain with agent-centric architecture, meaning each user maintains their own cryptographically signed chain of activity. Validation happens peer-to-peer between relevant parties rather than requiring the entire network to agree on every transaction, making it far more scalable and energy efficient.
HOT tokens are ERC-20 placeholders issued before HoloFuel was live. Once redeemed, HOT is burned and replaced 1:1 with HoloFuel on the live network. The swap is a one-way conversion, retiring HOT permanently and migrating holders into the active Holo ecosystem.
