Ren (REN) is a cryptocurrency that promotes interoperability and liquidity among various blockchain networks. It offers cross-chain atomic swaps, enabling users to trade different cryptocurrencies directly without relying on centralized exchanges. Additionally, Ren's introduction of "renVM," a virtual machine, allows for the execution of smart contracts on multiple blockchains, enhancing the interoperability of the Ren ecosystem. With its focus on interoperability and liquidity, Ren has the potential to improve decentralized finance (DeFi) by facilitating seamless transfers and exchanges of digital assets across platforms and networks.

Ren was acquired by Alameda Research in early 2022. When FTX and Alameda collapsed in November 2022, Ren’s operational funding evaporated. The protocol announced it could not maintain RenVM beyond Q1 2023 and advised users to unwrap assets immediately. RenVM v1 was formally wound down in December 2022, with significant renBTC liquidity stranded or at risk during the unwinding period.

Ren Protocol provided trustless cross-chain wrapped assets, primarily renBTC, by locking native BTC in a decentralized custodian network (RenVM) and minting ERC-20 equivalents on Ethereum. It was the primary decentralized competitor to wBTC’s centralized custody model.

The community attempted to rebuild under a new team as Ren 2.0, later rebranded to Catalog. The effort focused on rebuilding cross-chain interoperability infrastructure without Alameda dependency. Progress has been slow and the project operates with significantly reduced community confidence and liquidity compared to its peak.

RenVM used a network of Darknodes staking REN as collateral to jointly hold private keys via secure multi-party computation (sMPC). No single Darknode controlled the key; signing required a threshold of nodes. This created a trustless custodial model without a central intermediary, enabling renBTC, renZEC, renDOGE, and other wrapped assets.

The protocol’s primary product was destroyed by a third-party collapse unrelated to technical failure, which is a distinct and difficult risk category to price. Ren 2.0/Catalog faces extreme rebuilding challenges in a market where bridge and cross-chain infrastructure has become significantly more competitive (LayerZero, Wormhole, CCIP).
