Celestia (previously LazyLedger) is a data availability layer that is built with Cosmos SDK. It is intended to abstract the consensus layer of blockchains away from the execution layer. This means that the consensus of the blockchain can be done in a separate environment from the computation and state execution of the blockchain.

This concept is analogous to roll-ups, where computation can be done off-chain and only the final result is posted on-chain. Currently, the two viable roll-up technologies that have been deployed on Ethereum main net are optimistic and zero-knowledge (zk) roll-ups. Celestia is built to support the deployment of these roll-ups, by allowing any arbitrary roll-up to post data on their layer and be certain that data posted will be available.
