Current Trends in Ethereum Blobspace

Proto-danksharding, or EIP-4844, was implemented in the Dencun upgrade in March 2024. This upgrade introduced a separate fee market for "blobspace," which operates independently of Ethereum's blockspace. Blobspace is used for storing ephemeral data objects—large binary data chunks that are inaccessible to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and pruned after a fixed duration.

Blobspace was designed to meet the needs of data-intensive rollups by directly addressing their primary bottleneck and cost driver: data availability (DA). DA is crucial for rollup transactions, enabling state reconstruction and trustless verification, which ensures the security and integrity of rollups.
