The Ethereum network's transition to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) in September 2022 was a landmark event in crypto history. Though it was eventually overshadowed by the unexpected collapses of major institutions, including FTX, Alameda, Genesis, and many others, it nonetheless bore far-reaching implications for an industry that still features Ethereum at the forefront of the Layer 1 (L1) landscape. Today, the network continues to process and hold more monetary value than any other L1 by a wide margin, underscoring both Ethereum’s entrenched influence and the reliability of the PoS consensus mechanism overall.

In March, Ethereum is scheduled to undergo its Shanghai hard fork, which will be its most significant upgrade since the Merge. The Shanghai upgrade includes five key Ethereum improvement proposals (EIPs): EIP-3651, EIP-3855, EIP-3860, EIP-4895, and EIP-6049. Among these proposals, EIP-4895 is the most notable for many, as it will enable ETH withdrawals from the Ethereum beacon chain, also known as the consensus layer, for the first time since ETH staking was enabled in December 2020.
