A full-featured monolithic blockchain has so many components that optimizing it all eventually leads to a sacrifice in either decentralization, scability, or security, commonly referred to as the "Blockchain Trilemma." A divide-and-conquer approach to solving this trilemma has increasingly gained traction in the crypto community, advanced by Ethereum's scaling roadmap. Splitting a chain into modules (in this example: Execution, Settlement, Consensus, and Data Availability) and allowing projects to specialize in these modules could make the blockchain network structure more efficient in performing its duties while not compromising its decentralization or security.

Celestia is a project designed to serve as the Data Availability (DA) and Consensus layer within the modular blockchain architecture. Built with the Cosmos SDK, Celestia aims to abstract the Consensus layer from the Execution layer, allowing blockchain nodes to verify data availability without needing to download entire blocks of transactions. Instead, Celestia allows any rollup to post transaction data on its layer, while Celestia nodes just have to achieve consensus on the blocks being published (timestamping and ordering the blocks).
