Polkadot is an open-sourced cloud computing platform that enables the cross-chain transfers of data or assets without being limited to tokens alone. This capability allows for developers to interoperate with a wide variety of blockchains in the Polkadot network. Polkadot project developers often leverage the Substrate blockchain to catalyze the building and launching of projects and dApps. Substrate's native chains are fully capable of interconnecting to Polkadot and integrating onto its network, all while removing the need for bridges due to Substrate's utilization of Polkadot's Relay Chain.

The actual workings of Polkadot function through the implementation of a Relay Chain, Parachains, Parathreads, and bridges. The Relay Chain acts as the infrastructure and core of Polkadot as it connects and secures heterogenous blockchains while sporting a very barebones structure to accommodate maximal compatibility. Parachains, run by a collator, are most commonly blockchains that run parallel to the relay chain. These Parachains make up a network that promotes the flow of data across chains in a manner that boosts scalability due to transactions processing across the entirety of the multichain network. Parathreads are the more economical take on Parachains, offering developers a layaway-like pay structure. These offerings enable Polkadot's network to adapt and customize code on top of other blockchains such as Ethereum. In contrast, other blockchains may experience barriers due to the lack of interoperability that their infrastructural coding faces.
