The recent release of the BitVM whitepaper has caused quite a stir in the Bitcoin community as well as the broader blockchain ecosystem. The Turing-complete expressiveness that BitVM brings could potentially introduce many more use cases for Bitcoin. Until now, Bitcoin’s lack of Turing completeness has caused a significant divergence of developmental efforts and liquidity from Bitcoin itself to other solutions, such as sidechains and wrapped Bitcoin on other layer 1 chains. By enabling the arbitrary expression of logic on Bitcoin, it gives both developers and users a reason to solely utilize Bitcoin again.

To explain how BitVM enables Turing-complete expressiveness, one needs to understand how programs are executed. At its core, a program is a series of sequential bits, which can either be 1 or 0. By stringing bits in a more complex fashion, we can create logic gates, essentially creating conditional statements that ultimately form the basis for complex functions and, from that, advanced applications. BitVM enables this via bit value commitments and logic gate commitments. The former represents an on-chain representation of a bit-value while the latter is a combination of bit-value commitments that represent logic gates.
