The growth of blockchain technology has nurtured the development of various applications, most notably decentralized finance (DeFi). While there has been growth in various domains, such as decentralized storage and decentralized media, the most notable growth after DeFi would be decentralized social (DeSo). Especially after the spectacular rise of Friends.tech, there has been renewed interest in DeSo protocols.

Unlike DeFi, total value locked (TVL) is usually an insufficient gauge for adoption, as DeSo relies more on the size of its network rather than the value locked on it. Additionally, not all DeSo protocols publicly share their number of users, nor are the numbers shared publicly verifiable. In this research piece, we will look at the landscape of DeSo protocols, as well as look into several protocols that focus on migrating the Web2 social media to Web3.
