The Logbook: A brief history of North Korea's computer network

Between 1990 and 2000, the North Korean government ramped up its efforts to upgrade its IT infrastructure and develop a Linux-based operating system, called Red Star OS.

Red Star OS featured Naenara — which roughly translates to "My Nation" — a modified Firefox browser for accessing the country's Kwangmyong intranet service, which was released in 1996. With Kwangmyong, upper-class North Korean citizens could visit a few dozen North Korean websites to read government-sanctioned news (see propaganda) and buy airline tickets.
