The Logbook: A brief history of the world's first Internet search engine

Today's Web users are accustomed to immediately accessing information through leading search engines like Google.

However, before 1990, Internet search engines didn't exist. Users who wanted to find information had to manually comb through various servers around the world to identify and download what they needed. This all changed when a university systems administrator created Archie  — widely considered the first Internet search engine.
