In 1989, Canadian businessman David Walsh founded Bre-X, a mining company that would ultimately find itself in the center of one of the largest stock market scandals in Canadian history and one of the largest gold mining scams in the world.

Bre-X was founded with the mission to mine gold and diamonds in Canada. In 1990 the company went public on the Alberta Stock Exchange trading at around 30 Canadian cents a share. Bre-X did not do so well as a public business, however, with Walsh filing for personal bankruptcy soon after.
