Upcoming EIPs and the Ethereum 1.0 roadmap

Ethereum has gone through a series of changes instituted via hard forks since its launch in July 2015. These network upgrades are intended to improve scalability, user experience, and security — and are described by Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs).

Since there’s no central authority that makes decisions, there’s a rough consensus process with the ultimate goal of (mining) nodes upgrading their clients to new versions. If a part of the network does not upgrade, they will be on an incompatible version of the network. Unlike many new Proof-of-Stake networks like Cosmos or Polkadot, the upgrade process does not include a formal token vote.
