Transacting in the real world carries counterparty risks. One side can renege against the trade agreement and run away with another party’s deliverables without fulfilling their obligation, which leads to a reliance on trusted third parties for escrow and arbitration services.

The counterparty risks incurred are due to the lack of transaction atomicity. An atomic transaction is an indivisible series of operations such that either all actions occur or nothing does. Such atomicity can be enforced on blockchains enabling trustless token swaps, for instance. A failure of delivery from either side would cause the whole transaction to fail and any balance changes to revert. This is manifested in every trade, successful or failed, on decentralized exchanges (DEX) such as Uniswap.
