Many blockchains, middlewares, and on-chain protocols require their own trust network and the honest participation of the majority of actors within the network, be it validators, relayers, and/or operators. Many of them adopt a proof-of-stake (PoS) mechanism to ensure that they are (crypto-)economically incentivized to behave honestly.

Under PoS, actors would have to post collateral, usually in the form of the native token of the protocol (e.g., ether stakers securing the Ethereum network), and their collateral would be slashed should they misbehave.
