The debate over the definition of open-source came to light after a fascinating event regarding Compound and dForce, in which Compound accused dForce of copying its copyrighted software. The arguably undercovered topic of licensing use in DeFi projects brought me to write this piece and do some research on the topic with a sample set of 28 popular Ethereum DeFi projects. 

Because I am not a software licensing lawyer, or any lawyer, as a matter of fact, I will try to avoid making direct statements on the legal implication of the different types of licenses.
