Based in San Francisco, California, Kraken is one of the longest operating cryptocurrency exchanges, co-founded by Jesse Powell in 2011. The exchange was established as an alternative to the notorious exchange Mt. Gox, which shut down due to its infamous hack and loss of funds in 2014.

Kraken received venture funding from notable cryptocurrency investors like Blockchain Capital, Digital Currency Group, and angels such as Roger Ver in its early days. In addition, the business also attracted investment funding from non-crypto native investors, including Hummingbird Ventures, SBI Investment, and Money Partners Group. The exchange has also experimented with unconventional funding methods, such as its 2019 $13.5 million fundraise on the Bnk To The Future investment platform. As recently as March 2021, the exchange was seeking an additional funding round that would value it at $20 billion.
