For the better part of its existence, Bitcoin maintained its role as the dominant cryptocurrency by trading volume even as new tokens and coins popped up in an attempt to take market share.

Beginning in 2017, however, we saw this dominance begin to fade as a new crop of cryptocurrencies and exchanges pop up to fuel the retail demand brought forth by the ICO mania.
