Chess enthusiasts among you will be familiar with the ‘first-move advantage’ concept, where the first player to move will consistently win 52-56% of the time. The first-move advantage is an inherent structural flaw, a property of chess’ asynchronous gameplay. The only way to avoid the first-move advantage is to not play chess, which is probably fine if you care deeply about addressing systemic injustice in board games, but less fine if you enjoy playing chess.
