The Logbook: The pirate stock exchange

According to recent reports, there has been an uptick in maritime piracy incidents in 2020. For the first three months of 2020, there was a 24% increase in piracy incidents compared to the same period in 2019.

This is probably a surprise to those that have been following the pirate economy, as many reports have suggested that pirates have been all but eradicated thanks to improved anti-piracy measures implemented by maritime businesses. In fact, data have shown that the number of piracy events has dropped sharply since its peak in 2010.
