Kraken is one of the oldest cryptocurrency exchanges, co-founded by Jesse Powell in 2011. The exchange was formed as an alternative to the notorious exchange Mt. Gox, which shut down due to its infamous hack and loss of funds. Kraken was one of the first exchanges to be listed on the Bloomberg Terminal.

The exchange has received investment from some notable cryptocurrency investors which include Blockchain Capital, Barry Silbert (Digital Currency Group), and Trace Mayer. It has also attracted investment from investment from non-crypto native investors including Hummingbird Ventures, SBI Investment, and Money Partners Group.
