In the pursuit to (re)decentralize the web with blockchain and other web3 technologies, we are starting to see more and more chokepoints of centralization within the base layer infrastructure of distributed networks.

The issue is that many web3 applications today are either hosted on centralized cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS) or depend on relay service providers that host their nodes on such centralized cloud platforms. For example, Alchemy reported that as much as 70% of the world’s most-used Ethereum apps depend on their technology and the nodes they own and operate. Additionally, about 57% of Ethereum nodes are hosted on cloud services, with 40% of those hosted nodes relying on AWS.
