Deciphering the Metaverse: The Maturation of Financial Instruments

The metaverse has prompted a torrent of questions since its induction into the hall of fame of corporate jargon last year. A vague concept that has drawn a lot of attention lately, the metaverse spans many definitions, from dystopian hotbeds of corporate control to utopian reconstructions of modern-day societies in the digital realm. Among the many attempts to elucidate this nebulous term, a common denominator driving the discussion is the characteristic of being able to confer digital ownership.

As a result, an entire market has sprung up from concerted efforts to construct the future metaverse by supplying the most basic building blocks, that is, land plots. Despite the industry’s gold rush in Q4 2021, prices for virtual land plots have been on a downward spiral, in particular, since March this year. Prices for the cheapest properties in The Sandbox and Decentraland have nosedived by -61.7% and -57.1%, respectively, since March 1st.
