Staying private online is difficult, and most web browsers make no attempt to preserve their users’ privacy from their internet service providers (ISPs) and governments.

There are, however, several projects seeking to make internet privacy more accessible, the best-known of which is Tor. Tor ensures that nobody but the user knows both the user’s IP address and the content being accessed, and primarily relies on a technique called onion routing by which messages are wrapped in successive layers of encryption.
