Cryptocurrency mining serves a pivotal role in securing the network of a given Proof of Work (PoW) blockchain. The steadfast and still-growing ecosystem can be broken down into many verticals, but most important are its respective mining pools, manufacturers, and lenders as they provide the core components that enable a fluid mining process from semiconductor chip production and hardware to a cooperative space for combining computational power to hash algorithms.

The mining ecosystem was previously centered in China, but due to the recent regulatory crackdowns in 2021, the space saw a substantial departure of key players such as mining data centers, manufacturers, and operators from China over to countries like Kazakhstan, the United States, and Canada. Mining is popular in areas that offer an abundance of energy reserves and low energy retail prices. Within the United States, there are crypto mining hubs in New York, Kentucky, Georgia, and Texas (all of which contain notably high hashrates, per Foundry USA).
