Proof-of-stake (PoS) has become the major consensus mechanism for decentralized blockchains to achieve distributed consensus. PoS validators stake their own tokens to participate in the network and earn rewards for validating transactions and proposing new blocks. PoS has certain advantages over proof-of-work (PoW), as it is more energy-efficient and generally faster in block creation.

But on the flip side, it also comes with some unique risks like slashing and key mismanagement. For instance, if a validator goes offline, their stake would be slashed; if their validator key is compromised or lost, it could lead to a permanent loss of funds. These events not only incur a capital loss to stakers, but they also hurt the system's security and market confidence as a whole.
