As a social species, humans create emergent organizations beyond the individual—structures that range from friends and family to cities and civilizations. Our very biology, from our genes to our brains and bodies, has evolved to support these emergent structures because the social behavior they facilitate helps us survive and reproduce. History suggests that this evolutionary progression toward cooperative organizations of greater scale is unstoppable.

Arguably, the most scalable and durable organizations are going to be decentralized. An organization that is decentralized can’t be turned off and is resilient – or better yet, antifragile – to attacks to any single or few nodes or edges in the network. For internet-native global organizations to flourish and last, they must be scalable, adaptable, and resilient. Only then can they support natural advancement toward cooperative organizations of greater scale via diversification and integration.
