Most, if not all, "web3" games issue their own tokens in the form of governance tokens, in-game currencies, or both. In many ways, these game-related tokens are similar to initial coin offerings (ICOs), in which the game's development team raises funds to build the game they promised in exchange for giving early investors a stake in the game.

Others have chosen a hybrid fundraising method involving equity and token warrants, in which equity acts as a share of the game studio and token warrants provide investors with a share of the game itself. Some may also raise funds via NFT presales (e.g., avatars and lands). Such presales are sometimes referred to as initial game offerings (IGO).
