Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has moved 16,384 ETH, worth roughly $45 million at current prices, to personally finance a suite of open-source security and public technology projects.

The transaction, announced in a Friday post on X, coincides with what Buterin described as the Ethereum Foundation entering a “period of mild austerity” to ensure its long-term sustainability alongside an aggressive development roadmap.

Buterin framed the capital allocation as his “own share of the austerity,” stating that he would take on responsibilities previously considered foundation “special projects.”

The funds are earmarked for building what Buterin termed an “open-source, secure and verifiable full stack” of software and hardware. According to his post, this initiative spans finance, communication, governance, operating systems, secure hardware, and biotech applications for personal and public health.

The 16,384 ETH will be deployed toward these goals over the next few years, Buterin said. He added that he is exploring secure decentralized staking options to direct future staking rewards toward the long-term funding of these projects.

Buterin stated that Ethereum itself remains “an indispensable part” of this broader vision for openness and verifiability. The Ethereum Foundation will continue with a “steadfast focus” on core protocol development, with a stated priority being “Ethereum for people who need it” over “Ethereum everywhere.”

Broader push toward privacy and self-sovereignty

This financial commitment aligns with a series of recent public statements from Buterin outlining a focused agenda for the Ethereum ecosystem in 2026. On Jan. 16, he declared that “2026 is the year that we take back lost ground in terms of self-sovereignty and trustlessness.”

He also pointed to ongoing efforts like the Ethereum Foundation’s Kohaku wallet framework to boost onchain privacy and improve user experience, specifically calling for private payments with the same UX as public transactions. He also emphasized the need for tools that grant users greater control over personal data, citing the lightweight Helios client as a means to verify data from RPC providers.

In parallel, Buterin said he plans to return fully to decentralized social media in 2026, following Mask Network’s takeover of Lens Protocol. He described decentralization as essential for competition in social media and mass communication, emphasizing shared data layers that allow multiple clients to coexist.
