BIX Card Targets US Growth as Demand for Crypto-Enabled Payments Accelerates

The constraint on crypto card growth in the United States is not appetite. It is a map.

BIX, a neo-finance app pairing a self-custody wallet with a Visa card programme, currently supports eligible residents of 29 US states, subject to identity verification and programme requirements. The company says it is targeting expansion to 49 states within six to eight months, subject to applicable approvals and partner readiness.

That gap between where a product works and where people want it is the defining feature of the category, and increasingly the main thing standing between crypto payment products and ordinary retail adoption.

"There's nothing hard about selling BIX. The biggest challenge is educating people about its existence and the 20 more states that we will open in the coming months," said David Imonitie, head of US sales at BIX.

The demand side

The wider trend behind that demand is easy to observe. Stablecoin balances have become a working currency for a particular kind of user: people already holding digital assets, freelancers and contractors paid across borders, and families moving money between countries. For that group, a card that spends a stablecoin balance directly removes a conversion step that has traditionally taken days.

Imonitie said the people who understand the product fastest are those who have already run into that problem.

"Everyone gets the concept right away, but the customer who is already familiar with cryptocurrency, and some of the challenges they face in spending their digital assets, is absolutely excited about the BIX debit card and its ability to solve a huge issue in the market," he said.

Why coverage moves slowly

US card programmes involving digital assets are assembled from licensed components. Card issuing and other regulated financial services are delivered by third-party institutions under their own arrangements, and the permissions those institutions hold vary by state. BIX describes itself as a finance app rather than a bank.

The practical consequence is that adding a state is rarely a product decision. It is a question of whether a partner's authorisations extend there, and how long the relevant approvals take - which is why the company's own six-to-eight-month framing carries the qualifier about approvals and partner readiness rather than a firm date.

Competitors face the same arithmetic. No provider in this category currently offers uniform nationwide availability, and the leaders are distinguished mainly by how many states they have cleared and how honestly they describe the remainder.

"We are excited about the states we are open in and have great expectations for the rest. That will not dampen our enthusiasm or our work ethic in growing customer acquisition. The other states will open, and in the meantime we will grow," Imonitie said.

What the product offers where it is live

In the states BIX supports, the card runs on Visa, backed by USDC or USDT held in a self-custody wallet across supported combinations of Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Base, Solana and Optimism. Purchases settle to the merchant in fiat.

Standard membership is free, a virtual Visa card costs $9.99, and the company says there are no funding fees, with a 1% FX fee applied to eligible foreign-currency purchases under the US programme. Spending limits are, in BIX's description, flexible and customizable based on the user's deposited collateral, subject to programme requirements.

Further features are in development, including BIX Plus at $119 a year, virtual accounts connecting stablecoin balances to ACH, SEPA and SWIFT, physical cards, and direct wallet-linked spending.

The measure that matters

For a payments product, availability is the feature. A card with strong economics that a prospective customer cannot open is worth less to them than a mediocre one they can.

On the company's own timeline, BIX's position changes materially within the year. Whether it arrives on schedule will be decided largely by regulators and partner institutions rather than by the company itself - a dependency the category has yet to find a way around.
