August was a relatively lackluster month for the crypto industry, with signs of declining user interest and investor optimism. Despite dovish comments signaling imminent interest rate policy changes from Federal Reserve Chairman Powell in the last week of August, most Layer 1 (L1) protocols ended the month with significant declines in their valuations. Still, some L1 ecosystems were able to maintain positive usage metrics during a relatively muted month, reflecting the continued evolution of today’s largest smart contract platforms regardless of market dynamics. In this report, we dig into the nuances of these metrics to arrive at a comprehensive picture of the L1 blockchain landscape in August.

Most of the largest L1s saw their valuations dip dramatically over the course of August. Ethereum led the way with a month-over-month decline of ~22.2%, shaving ~$86.3 billion off its market cap. Solana and The Open Network (TON) also saw major MoM drawdowns of ~21.1% and ~19.1%, respectively. TON’s market performance in August was especially impacted by the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov on August 24th, adding new uncertainty to the fates of both Telegram and the TON ecosystem.
