Skeptic’s lens: Orphaned blocks in Bitcoin are becoming less frequent as miners improve direct communication

Orphaned blocks, or more precisely stale blocks, are valid blocks that are no longer part of the main (longest) chain. They usually happen when two mining pools produce blocks at a similar time.

The mining pool whose block is rejected does not collect any mining reward or transaction fees, and the block with a larger hash rate is then accepted into the main chain.
