For the past few weeks, Ethereum Twitter and Reddit have been humming with debates centered around community, governance, and competition.

The proverbial powder keg of these debates was ignited by the resurfacing of the controversial EIP-999 proposal. EIP-999 was originally proposed by Parity Technologies to recover the 500,000+ ETH locked in its multi-signature wallet back in November 2017. Of these locked funds, 306,000 belonged to interoperability protocol Polkadot, which the Web3Foundation commissioned Parity to work on. Ryan Zurrer, the director of the Web3Foundation and a former investor for crypto hedge fund Polychain Capital, started the debate by asking for a “legitimate vote that is properly announced, available to a wider audience than just a few wallet types & really test the community’s sentiment,” advocating that fund recovery “is the right thing to do.”
