A Look at Optimium Adoption

Optimiums, named after optimistic rollups, are layer 2s (L2s) that rely on fraud proofs for finality. Similar to optimistic rollups, state changes proposed by Optimiums are presumed to be valid unless challenged with a corresponding fraud proof. As such, Optimiums also require an arbitrary waiting period for state changes proposed to be finalized. The main advantage that Optimiums offer is further reducing transaction costs for users because they post transaction data off-chain, thereby saving the gas cost that would have to be spent posting transaction data on Ethereum.

The largest Optimium by TVL, the Mantle Network, has seen a considerable increase in both TVL and active addresses since its launch in July 2023. Mantle was launched by BitDAO, the decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) behind ByBit. The BIT token, which was the governance token for BitDAO, was migrated to MNT token, which is now used for the governance of the Mantle Network as well as to incentivize activity on the Optimium.
