Chromia, a Layer 1 (L1) blockchain slated to launch its mainnet in Q3 2024, utilizes a unique framework, Postchain, to scale its throughput. Postchain is designed to store blockchain data in a relational database and by leveraging Postchain’s framework to deploy multiple decentralized application (dapp) chains, Chromia can better scale the throughput of dapp chains by segregating dapp chains into respective dapp clusters.

Chromia’s use of dapp clusters is akin to selective sharding. In typical sharded chains, each shard is identical to the other shards, with the occasional exception of a main shard, such as Elrond or Near. However, Chromia’s clusters are essentially customized shards, and since application developers can choose which cluster they want to deploy on, Chromia scales dapps the same way selective sharding would, by optimizing the allocation of computational resources of the network.
