Scaling Optimistic Rollups

The Optimism Collective recently announced the development of the OP Stack, a horizontal scaling solution that would allow developers to leverage Optimism’s codebase with much greater customizability. Essentially, the OP Stack is a modular framework that allows developers to select their own consensus, execution, and settlement layer.

Currently, Optimism’s focus is on the development of Bedrock, which would commence the flagship release of the OP Stack. Optimism Bedrock is scheduled for Q1 2023 and promises significant upgrades to the existing Optimism client, such as optimized calldata submissions, improved syncing and sequencing, as well as a new fault-proof system: Cannon. The white boxes in the diagram above represent the choices that Optimism Bedrock makes in the context of OP Stack’s framework, but other alternatives can be adopted as well.
