StopSIMCrime warns about the dangers of SIM swapping

Hackers stole millions of dollars in cryptocurrency last year by taking over victims' phone numbers through SIM swapping, and a small group of victims are fighting back by educating others, launching the StopSIMCrime initiative, reports Motherboard.

They believe there's not enough awareness regarding the issue, and they’re aiming to teach both consumers and legislators about the dangers of SIM swapping. They also hope to put pressure on mobile phone providers, which according to StopSIMCrime founder Robert Ross, do not put enough effort into fighting the hackers.

Ross himself fell victim to the hack last year, losing approximately $1 million from his Gemini and Coinbase accounts. He then decided to rise up against the hackers and, along with other victims, provide a platform to instigate the change.
