Stablecoin issuer Circle (CRCL) has struck a sponsorship deal with Premier League soccer giant Chelsea to become its principal partner and official front-of-shirt sponsor.

Announced Friday, the deal sees Circle and USDC branding on men's, women's, and academy shirts beginning with the 2026/27 season.

The announcement comes as stablecoin adoption accelerates globally, dominated by U.S. dollar-pegged assets. Total U.S. dollar stablecoin supply currently stands at $292.2 billion, according to The Block's data dashboard. Tether's USDT accounts for $183.3 billion (62.7%) of that figure, and Circle's (USDC) accounts for $73.9 billion (25.3%), adding $1 billion over the past week.

USDC is positioned to operate under the GENIUS Act framework that President Donald Trump signed into law last year. Tether's USDT primarily operates outside of that framework globally, with its smaller USAT stablecoin launched specifically for the U.S. market.

In a statement shared with The Block, Circle said stablecoins are moving from early adoption toward the mainstream by reducing the cost and friction of transferring value to broaden participation in the global economy. Bringing USDC to one of sport's biggest global stages reflects the scale and ambition of that opportunity, the company said.

"We built USDC on the belief that money should work seamlessly for everyone everywhere, the way the internet does," Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said. "Partnering with Chelsea connects us with a global sports community built on that exact same borderless vision."

"This partnership with Circle positions Chelsea at the forefront of football’s digital evolution," Chelsea FC President Jason Gannon added. "We are two organisations fixated by the future and are relentlessly innovating to be in the best position possible for the long-term."

Crypto sports sponsorships rebound

The deal offers crypto a prominent placement as the industry rebuilds its sports sponsorship presence following a retrenchment after the 2022 market downturn.

Previous major tie-ups have included Crypto.com's $700 million, 20-year naming rights deal for the former Staples Center, Tezos' reported £20 million-a-year Manchester United training kit sponsorship, and OKX's Manchester City partnership. The value and duration of Circle's Chelsea agreement were not disclosed.

In June, the UK's Financial Conduct Authority warned Premier League and other soccer clubs about sponsorship agreements with unauthorized crypto firms, urging them to consider financial crime and reputational risks. Circle holds an FCA electronic money issuer license in the UK.

Reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions Chelsea began the 2026-27 season with a 3-2 victory away to Fulham on Monday, playing without a shirt sponsor. The Circle and USDC branding will feature at the club's first home game of the season on Sunday against Brighton and Hove Albion at its 40,000-capacity Stamford Bridge stadium.
