Modular blockchain project Celestia has introduced what’s known as Blobstream for the Ethereum mainnet — enabling developers to deploy layer-two rollups using Celestia for data availability.

In this setup, a smart contract on Ethereum acts as an on-chain light client that verifies the accuracy of data transmitted by Celestia’s light clients. Celestia developed Blobstream in collaboration with Succinct Labs.

This offers a permissionless, high-throughput data availability product for Ethereum L2s — secured by cryptoeconomic guarantees rather than relying on reputation or undisclosed trust assumptions.

"Blobstream enables developers in any ecosystem to spin up their own high-throughput blockspace with Celestia underneath," Succint Labs said.

Blobstream’s latest deployment follows its release on Base and Arbitrum ecosystems earlier this year.

What is data availability?

Data Availability refers to the assurance that data relevant to a blockchain network, like transactions and states, is accessible to all network participants.

Celestia operates what’s called data availability sampling — a technique used to improve the efficiency of verifying data availability in large-scale blockchain networks. Instead of requiring each node to download and verify all data, which can be highly resource-intensive, DAS allows nodes to verify the availability of all data by only downloading and checking random samples of the data.

This technique considerably reduces the bandwidth and storage requirements for nodes, making it more feasible to maintain decentralization as the blockchain scales. DAS is particularly relevant in the context of sharded blockchains and Layer 2 scaling solutions, where ensuring data availability across multiple partitions or layers can become complex.
