EigenLayer’s official X account hacked to promote fake airdrop
Quick Take
- The official X account of EigenLayer has been compromised and used to promote a fake airdrop, according to developer Eigen Labs.
The official X account of restaking protocol EigenLayer was hacked on Friday morning, developer Eigen Labs confirmed.
“The @EigenLayer handle has been compromised. Please do not engage with any suspicious links and actively double check and verify you are engaging with 'eigenlayer.xyz.' An update will be provided once secured,” Eigen Labs posted.
“EigenLayer X/Twitter account is currently compromised, do not click any links,” blockchain sleuth ZachXBT had earlier warned on his Telegram channel.
The initial fake post appeared to promote a false reallocation of EIGEN tokens for Season 2 of EigenLayer’s stakeholder airdrop. It used a malicious link, according to crypto anti-scam platform Scam Sniffer. A second post urging users to make a claim followed around 10 minutes later, then a third "final call" post. The official Season 2 stakedrop was announced in September, and the claim period has already ended.
EigenLayer is a platform that lets users deposit and stake ether, aiming to allocate those funds to secure third-party networks or actively validated services (AVSs).
The Block reached out to the Eigen Foundation for comment.
It’s not the first time social media accounts have been hacked in recent months to promote crypto scams, with incidents impacting the X accounts of Hulk Hogan, Metallica, Doja Cat and McDonald’s, among others.
